Torin Craig

Artist member since 2021
Toronto, Ontario

Torin Craig is an emerging Toronto based artist and OCAD U graduate. Their work often combines abstract intuitive painting with a process of digital collage and projection to create images, with a strong focus on spontaneity, luminosity and direct expression in the material process. Torin works with ideas of spiritual experience, mental health, critical theory, and magic in the modern technological world. Upcoming projects include a new body of painted work, as well as forays into sculpture and installation, with thematic explorations of different ways of being as a neurodivergent person in revolt against "normality" and the capitalist ideologies of today.

Why is art important to you?

Art making is a form of direct visual communication that transcends words and the thinking mind.

When did you start making art, and why?

I've always loved to draw, mostly sci-fi characters when I was really young. I started to paint in high school to express emotions and impulses that started to overwhelm me.

When I'm not making art, I'm (a) ...

I play in a band and consider music to be just as much of a creative dedication as painting.

What kind of artwork do you have in your home?

Some of my own, and some from my friends.
